Every pet has an accident from time to time, whether it is a puppy being potty trained, or an aging cat suffering from kidney disease. Whatever the case may be, finding a puddle of odorous urine is certainly an odious discovery. Fortunately, there are a number of waste-removal methods that will eradicate evidence of unsightly stains and unpleasant smells from your carpet. Most urine stains can be abolished with home remedies right in your kitchen!

Home products needed

White vinegar
Baking soda
Hydrogen peroxide 3%
Dishwasher detergent/fluid

Initial Cleanup

  • Soak up as much of the urine is possible with ample paper towels or old rags. Time is of the essence, so the quicker you can do this, the better.
  • Mix equal parts white vinegar and water in a bowl, making sure there is enough to fully saturate the stained area.
  • Slowly pour the liquid over the urine stain, covering the entire space until it is flooded. The vinegar should combat the ammonia in the urine and help with the stench.
  • Get an old scrub brush that you will not mind throwing away, and scrub the vinegar/water mix deeply into the carpet.
  • Soak up the area with paper towels or rags. In cases of recent soiling, this method may be sufficient to solve the unpleasant smell as well as remove the stain. If there is a remaining odor and an area of discoloration, proceed with the next level of deep cleaning to fix the problem.

Deep Scrub & De-stain

  • If there appears to still be a mark when the area is dry, take a handful of baking soda and sprinkle/rub it into the carpet stain. This will not only further deodorize the area, but will also help lighten any stain which may be residual after the vinegar wash.
  • Next mix a teaspoon of dishwasher soap with half a cup of hydrogen peroxide 3% and rub onto the stain. Scrub the area vigorously.
  • When the cleansing solution has dried, finish by vacuuming the carpet.

This should remove the stain and smell entirely. Always be patient with your cat or dog when accidents happen, since most of the time they are never done intentionally.
