January 16th, 2015 there was a pet food recall by the pet food company Oma’s Pride, due to a possible Salmonella contamination. Such a contamination poses a risk not only to the felines who consume the food, but also the adults who handle the product and may be susceptible to the bacteria.
Though there have been no illnesses tied to the product reported at this point, the necessity for a recall was determined through a sampling program by the Pesticide and Plant Pest Management Division at the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development. The product tested positive for salmonella, and the company urges consumers to return the product for a full refund.
Salmonella symptoms include: lethargy, diarrhea, fever, abdominal cramping, urinary tract symptoms, and in some cases, vomiting, etc. Pets with such symptoms should be taken to a veterinarian immediately.
