English Dog Breeds

England is one of the most prolific countries when it comes to producing popular dog breeds, with the most extensive list of breed varieties in the world. Some of the most well-known, and well-liked dog breeds are English ones.

English Mastiff: The English Mastiff, a giant among dogs, is one of the oldest mastiff breeds, and is quite recognizable its broad and square head, and muscular body. The English Mastiff is a guard dog and has a temperament that is well suited for his job. It is very protective of its family, can be a great protector of person and property.

Beagle: One of the most recognizable hunting dogs, the Beagle is a medium-sized dog which was developed for hunting hare. As a scent hound, the Beagle uses its olfactory sense in order to track prey. Aside from the Bloodhound and Basset Hound, the Beagle has the most acute sense of smell among dogs.

Airedale Terrier: Also called the Bingley Terrier, the Airedale originates from the valley of the river Aire, which is located in Yorkshire, England. It is the largest of terriers, and claims the Welsh Terrier and Otter-hounds as its ancestors. The Airedale is highly intelligent and independent which have been bred into the breed to give it its great hunting abilities.

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel: A toy dog, the Cavalier is a small spaniel, as the name suggests, and is very popular across the world. It has silky smooth coat, which requires consistent care. The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is great with children and loves being around people.

English Bulldog: Often just called the Bulldog, the breed is the quintessential English dog. The Bulldog has a very friendly demeanor, and is often listed as one of the most family-friendly dogs to have, especially for households with young children.

English Foxhound: As the name clearly states, the English Foxhound was developed for hunting foxes. It is a large scent hound that was developed in the late 16^th century. The English Foxhound is another one of the highly recognizable English dog breeds mainly due to its prominence as the hunting dog for English royalty.

Gordon Setter: Hailing from Scotland, the Gordon Setter is a hunting dog which was developed for hunting small game, mostly birds. It has a striking appearance with a silky black coat with brown muzzle and chest. It is a loyal and affectionate breed that makes a great pet, as long as it has the opportunity to get plenty of exercise.

Labrador Retriever: The extremely popular Labrador is known around the world. This hunting dog, has an extremely calm temperament, and makes the perfect family dog, and companion. As a hunting dog its job is to retrieve game, mostly from water, but at home it is the most lovable family companion anyone could ask for.

Corgi: Popular with British royalty, the Corgi comes in two varieties, the Pembroke Welsh Corgi, and the Cardigan Welsh Corgi. Originally used as herding dogs, the Corgi is mostly a companion breed nowadays. The Corgi is believed to have its ancestry, partly, in the Swedish Vallhund.

Jack Russell Terrier: Another famous dog breed, the Jack Russell Terrier is a small breed of dog developed for hunting foxes. It has a lot of energy, and can be a bit temperamental, so it does not make an ideal pet for a family with young children. The Jack Russell Terrier is high energy, and requires more exercise than the average small dog.
